Daniel Stahre Music

In the new album Margin Call II, the present blends with Daniel Stahre’s lyrical piano melodies

Gothenburg pianist Daniel Stahre returns with the new album Margin Call II – an instrumental fusion of contemporary, jazz and pop. With some of Sweden’s finest musicians, the listener is invited to a progressive and melodic journey rooted in the Nordic tradition.

In the sequel ”Margin Call II”, Daniel Stahre comments on contemporary life in a personal way, almost out of necessity. In songs like ’Infinite Liquidity’ and ’Market Maker’, inspiration is drawn from the great financial endpoint that also adorns the album series: Margin Call – to cover a loss or be forced to sell.

Daniel explores the idea of an end point which preoccurs every crisis and where power imbalances are allowed to break. Towards the end of the album, songs such as ’This is life’ and ’Waltz no. 3’ offer reconciliatory progress and resolution. The music sounds clear despite a difficult terrain and carries a bright appearance reminiscent of the Swedish musical tradition of Lars Jansson, J:son Lindh and Bobo Stenson.

The musicians once again include members of Little Dragon and Franska Trion, with Viktor Turegård on double bass, Erik Bodin on drums and Martin Freidlitz on electric guitar. The album was recorded in Gothenburg by Åke Linton in January 2023 and stereo-mastered at the Swedish Grammophone Studio by Hans Olsson. Parts of the album are mixed in Dolby Atmos at Spinnroad Studios in Lindome.

The new album Margin Call II will be released digitally on June 24, 2024. The Dolby Atmos singles ’Gånglåt från Halland’ will be released on April 24 and ’Swinging’ on May 25 on all digital music platforms.

About Daniel Stahre

Gothenburg-based pianist and songwriter Daniel Stahre has released four albums; Notes (Strangers Candy, 2014), Skenet (self-release with poet Sara Paborn, 2017), Margin Call (AMP Music & Records, 2022) and the upcoming self-released Margin Call II (dimbank, 2024). During the 2010’s, Daniel participated and played in the Stockholm pop scene with bands such as Grapell, Humfree Bug Art and Many Voices Speak.

With inspiration from instrumental pop, yet progressive and rooted in the Nordic folk music, the songs resonates with the Swedish legacy of Bo Hansson, Björn J:son Lindh och Dungen (Arbetarbladet, 2015)

Discography

Daniel Stahre (formerly Westin) debuts with his own instrumental piano quartet, creating melodic Scandinavian soundscapes on the album ”Notes”. The music moves in a melancholy and barren landscape, nevertheless without optimism. The music speaks of hope for a better world, balanced by equal parts sadness and darkness. Daniel Westin Quartet makes pop music, but in a jazz costume signed producer Åke Linton.

– “Notes” is about striving against your own medium, and I have always strived for simplicity. What is not being played is as important as what is being played, if not more, Daniel Westin says about the album.

Pianisten Daniel Westin Stahre och
författaren Sara Paborn släpper skiva

Margin Call (AMP Music & Records, 2022)

The first Margin Call-album was released in May 2022 on the Norwegian record company AMP Music & Records. It has since been played on national Danish radio P8 Jazz and met with good reviews in daily press and blogs. The first album found inspiration in exploring the margin calls in our personal lives; notions of our reality that can be difficult to shake. Just like we in society tend to do something similar when we over-borrow with a climate debt and large private loans.
